Daryl Watson

Campus Pastor at City Impact Church Invercargill

Born to Win

As Campus Pastor of City Impact Church Invercargill with his wife Roberta, Daryl Watson’s mission in life is to help people win.

“The Bible says that when we’re born of God, we can overcome anything. So whatever I do, whether it’s preaching or just sitting down with people one on one, my motive is to help people win in every area of life. I want to know, ‘Where do you want to go in life? Where do you feel God’s leading you? How can I help you get there?’”

 Pastor Daryl Watson

Called to Ministry

Growing up as the eldest of five children, Daryl always knew that God was real.

“Mum was a believer but didn’t go to church much. Dad would take us to a small Pentecostal church though. He would kneel by our beds and pray with us each night.”

Then one day, at about the age of 16, Daryl had an encounter with God.

“We were singing ‘Our God Reigns’ and I felt the presence of God all over me. The Pastor asked if anyone wanted to give their life to Christ and my hand shot up. That song talks about bringing the good news to people. I knew in that moment I was called to preach – to proclaim that Jesus Christ is Lord”

‘We just kept saying yes’

Daryl married Roberta at the age of 21 and they got involved in ministry on a voluntary basis.

“We led the youth, I led worship, and we took a home group every week. Whatever we were asked to do we said ‘yes’. We knew that church ministry was going to be a big part of our lives.”

Peter and Bev Mortlock

Later, their pastor asked them to plant a church in Te Anau and it was while there that they first met City Impact Church Senior Pastors Peter and Bev Mortlock. They were immediately impressed by their appetite for life, their boldness and their faith for God to move.

“The churches in Te Anau, Wanaka, Queenstown, and Cromwell would combine for a family camp each year and the Queenstown Church would often invite Peter Mortlock to come and speak. One year, as Pastor Peter prayed for me, something just exploded inside of me. I heard God say, “Partner with this man.”

Soon afterwards, Daryl and Roberta accepted an offer to pastor in Melbourne, relocating there with their young family. After two years, they received an email from Peter Mortlock, asking if they would return to New Zealand to pastor City Impact Church Invercargill.

“Immediately I felt the same thing that had exploded within me years earlier. I knew straight away that this was from God.”

Daryl and Roberta started pastoring City Impact Church Invercargill in 2003. For ten years, they met in a rented building where everything had to be set up and packed down every Sunday.  For a while, they couldn’t even access the building until Sunday, so that meant 6am starts every week.

“Our entire sound and lighting rig lived in a truck. We brought everything in, from Kids Church stuff to welcome packs and info. Everything lived in plastics tubs.”

In 2013 Daryl and Roberta were looking for another temporary location while their rented building got refurbished. They received a call from another pastor, asking if we wanted to take over his lease. His building was the old movie theatre right on the main street of Invercargill! After a whole lot of renovating, City Impact Church Invercargill finally had a place to call home.
